Lower Back Pain / Low Back Pain

A completely healthy, properly aligned low back can support a tremendous amount of weight...If, however, the lower back is misaligned...picking a pencil up off the floor or lifting your child into your arms can lead to a devastating lower back injury.

Each year, it is estimated, that over 50% of adults will experience back pain.  In fact, approximately 8 out of 10 people will experience back pain during their lifetime. Lower back pain is the second leading cause of visits to the doctor.

Anatomically, the lower back is built to allow a great deal of mobility, however, this increased range of motion comes with a price -- increased instability and chance of injury.

A completely healthy, properly aligned low back can support a tremendous amount of weight and withstand a great deal of stress.  Olympic weightlifters can safely lift several hundred pounds without injury.  If, however, the lower back is misaligned or the muscles stabilizing the spine are weak, something as mundane as picking a pencil up off the floor or lifting your child into your arms can lead to a devastating lower back injury.

Doctors used to think that a back injury could heal on its own, however, recent research has shown that when the underlying cause of the pain is not addressed, the back pain may subside temporarily but will likely return as the damage accumulates.  Multiple episodes of lower back pain should be taken very seriously.

The Causes of Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is caused by a variety of issues -- a kidney stone, a fracture, a torn ligament or muscle, a muscle spasm, a bulging or herniated discarthritis, a subluxated or misaligned vertebrae.  Factors leading to lower back pain include a sports injury or auto accident, poor posture, obesity & even psychological stress
Here are some of the most common causes of lower back pain:

Subluxations

If the vertebrae in the lower back are misaligned or not moving properly, over time the discs and bones will degenerate. If left untreated, this degeneration will eventually lead to severe low back pain and sometimes pain in the hip, thigh, knee, leg, ankle and foot as well.  Fortunately, if caught early enough, subluxations can be corrected and the degeneration prevented resulting in immediate and long lasting pain relief.

Disc Herniations

Many individuals have a herniated disc and are not even aware of it.  In fact, one study found that nearly 50% of all adults had at least one herniated or bulging disc without any associated lower back pain. Herniated discs can, however, cause severe and crippling low back pain. If the herniation is large enough, the symptoms can travel down the leg and into the foot.  Chiropractic care can provide significant relief and is essential to prevent further disc damage and deterioration.

Sprains, Strains and Spasms

This type of injury is common among individuals who do minimal exercise Monday through Friday but once the weekend rolls around, push themselves beyond their physical limits trying to be like Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods. On Sunday evening, these weekend warriors, are laid out in pain. These injuries result from weak, inflexible muscles and ligaments in the lower back that are stretched too far causing in the tissues to tear. The tears cause inflammation, swelling and stiffness.

Stress

Stress causes a fight or flight response in your body resulting in a release of hormones.  These hormones elevate your blood pressure, increase your heart rate and a cause the muscles in your body to tense up. This can save your life in the short term if you encounter a bear, however, chronic stress brought on by issues with family, work, traffic and money is detrimental to your health.  Chronic stress overworks your body causing tender, fatigued muscles in your lower back and elsewhere.  Chiropractic care along with relaxation techniques like meditation and exercise are very effective at reducing lower back pain due to stress..

Chiropractic Care for Lower Back Pain

Studies have shown again and again that natural chiropractic care is the #1 most effective, lowest cost and longest lasting treatment for low back pain. Your chiropractor can locate misaligned or improperly moving joints in your lower back and/or pelvis and, with a series of gentle adjustments, restore proper function and motion.  The end result is a decrease in inflammation, elimination of pain and a return to normal activity.

Chiropractic care addresses the underlying cause of the lower back pain.  Bed rest and medications such as pain killers and muscle relaxants only serve to mask the symptoms temporarily.  While the pain may go away in the short term, the underlying problem is never addressed which often results in further degeneration that may ultimately lead to surgery.   Aside from being extremely invasive, surgery often results in poor long term outcomes.

Lower back pain should be taken seriously especially when the pain is felt on more than one occasion or last for more than a week.  There are many causes of low back pain and some of those conditions can be very serious. Your chiropractor is an expert when it comes to determining the cause of your lower back pain and the best treatment approach. Occasionally we will refer to another health care specialist, however, most cases of back pain can be effectively treated with chiropractic care without the need for drugs or surgery.
