Neck Pain / Upper Back Pain

Neck Pain / Upper Back Pain

Neck Pain & Upper Back Pain

Neck pain & upper back pain...can be caused by any number of things including poor posture, whiplash, subluxations, stress or a herniated disc.

Neck pain and upper back pain are two of the most common complaints seen a chiropractic office. The pain can be caused by any number of things including poor posturewhiplash, subluxations or misaligned vertebrae, stress or a herniated disc.  Most people truly don't appreciate how vital proper neck range of motion is until they lose the ability to perform everyday tasks like looking over their shoulder to back out of a parking space.

The neck, which has relatively weak supporting musculature, must move a very heavy head around all day while at the same time providing a large amount of flexibility.   All these factors make the neck very vulnerable to injury.

The nerves from the neck branch out and supply the head, upper back and arms.  Symptoms like pain, numbness, tingling, and cold hands, which are often mistaken for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), may actually be due to pinched nerves in the neck.

Other symptoms indicating a possible neck issue include headaches, migraines, high blood pressure, tense or painful muscles in the upper back and shoulders, ear infections, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), TMJ problems, allergies, asthma, dizziness, insomnia and sinus problems.

The following are the most common causes of neck pain and upper back pain.

Trauma

Whiplash is the most common type of traumatic neck injury.  Whiplash is due to a sudden, violent whipping motion of the head resulting in tearing to the muscles, ligaments and discs in the neck & upper back.  Traumas like an auto accident, sports injury, or rough roller coaster ride can all result in whiplash. Even minor trauma to the neck is a major concern due to the fact that whiplash related damage & symptoms can take days, weeks, months or sometimes even years to show up.  Many individuals make the mistake of not seeking treatment because they believe that their injuries are minor.  Far too often, however, major problems show up down the road as a result of irreversible damage.  In most cases, this damage could have been prevented had they sought out immediate care.  Even if your symptoms are not severe or you are currently not in pain, it is always a good idea to get evaluated by a good chiropractor to ensure that you won't have severe issues in the future.

Bad Posture / Poor Posture

Common stresses like improper sleeping positions or sitting at a computer all day long can lead to posture problems that have long term consequences to our health and well being.

Poor Posture

Bad Posture is one of the most common reasons for neck & upper back pain. Poor posture is epidemic in our society due to  lifestyle factors.  Common stresses  like improper sleeping positions or sitting at a computer all day long can have lead to posture problems that have long term consequences to our health and well being.

Subluxations

A misalignment of any two bones in the body is known as a subluxation.  When this occurs in the spine it is of particular concern because the nervous system, which controls everything in your body, can be affected.  Subluxatons in the neck and upper back are common due to the fact that the cervical spine is inherently unstable and can be misaligned by a number of factors including falls, car accidents, whiplash injuries, bad posture and stress. It is not uncommon to see subluxations in infants due to the large amount of force placed on their delicate spines during the delivery process. These subluxations in children have been linked conditions like sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), colic, allergies and asthma to name a few

Stress

Stress causes muscles to involuntarily tense and stiffen.  This is especially true for the muscles in the neck and upper back.  This muscle tension causes pain, stiffness and misalignments in the vertebrae of the neck

Herniated Disc

Although disc herniations are more commonly associated with the lower back, herniations can occur in the cervical spine particularly from whiplash injuries.  This can cause symptoms, not only in the neck, but also in the upper back, shoulder, arm, elbow, forearm, wrist and hand. Symptoms include pain, numbness, tingling, weakness and muscles atrophy.
