Sciatica or sciatic nerve pain is cause by irritation or compression to the sciatic nerve.  The sciatic nerve is the largest & longest nerve in your body.   It runs from the lower back, down the back of the leg into the foot.  It is responsible for sensation and muscle function in many parts of the thigh, leg and foot.

What causes Sciatica?

Sciatic nerve pain is most commonly the result of a subluxation in the lumbar spine or a herniated disc in the lower back. Other causes include sitting on a wallet & piriformis syndrome.  The piriformis is a muscle in your butt that stretches across the sciatic nerve.  If this muscle becomes inflamed or goes into spasm, sciatica can result.

How do I know if I have sciatica?
