Whiplash

An auto accident, sports injury or even a rough roller coaster ride can cause a whiplash injury.

Whiplash refers to a injury to the muscles, nerves, ligaments, tendons, discs and bones of the neck due to a violent, rapid whipping motion of the head.  An auto accident, sports injury or even a rough roller coaster ride can cause a whiplash injury.  These types of injuries can have a major impact of an individuals quality of life both immediately and years later.  Disturbances in brain and nervous system function, decreased range of motion and inability to perform everyday activities are just a few of the problems encountered.

Whiplash injuries create a complex problem for many health care professionals.  Acute or recent whiplash injuries, many times, are difficult for most doctors to diagnose even with X-ray.  They often miss many of the subtle clues that a whiplash injury has occured. Even an MRI may not show the full extent of the trauma.

Diagnosis aside, treatment of whiplash injuries is frequently inadequate.  Too often, sufferers seek medical attention and are prescribed injections, pills, neck braces, ice and rest.  These treatments serve only to mask the symptoms and provide short-term relief but, unfortunately, never address the underlying structural damage.  This often leads to significant, irreversible spinal degeneration later on.

Whiplash Related Injuries

Depending on the extent of injuries suffered, symptoms of whiplash can include dizziness, confusion and disorientation, inability to focus, fatigue, irritability, insomnia, depression, neck pain, headache, upper back pain, numbness, tingling, shoulder pain, arm pain, TMJ problems and low back pain.  Cervical disc herniation  and/or cervical spine degeneration are common causes of these symptoms.  These problems can occur hours, days, weeks, months, or even years after the initial trauma and, if not treated properly, can become permanent.

Whiplash Treatment

If proper care is implemented in the early stages, most whiplash injuries will heal fully within a few months.   Rarely is surgery necessary. Without question, chiropractic care is the most effective treatment for eliminating pain and preventing long-term disability from whiplash related injuries. By applying very specific and gentle adjustments to the joints of the neck coupled with targeted at-home rehab exercises, your chiropractor can help you to restore the normal function and position of your cervical spine.
